Our Activities
Tanzania Vision Support wants to support and help visually impaired children in a very direct and practical way. Our mission is to improve chances and levels of education for blind and low vision children and to increase their personal independence in daily acitivities.
Our support is aimed at different areas. An overview of our current projects will be presented below. (Please click on the images to enlarge)
Kibasila Resource Center
At Kibasila Resource Center, Dar es Salaam blind and low vision children attend a special training to prepare them for integration in regular schools. Specialist teachers are able to get some hands on experience with visually impaired children. Thanks to financial support of Tanzania Vision Support, Mariëlle Jongsma was able to start up this resource center in April 2002 and arrange for special educational resources and adapted school furniture.

Uhuru Annex
Uhuru Primary School, Dar es Salaam comprises an annex (Uhuru Annex) where both a boarding school and some regular classrooms are located. Currently there is no classroom available for the youngest children (4 up to 7 years of age) at Uhuru Annex. With the help of Tanzania Vision Support a small neglected building was renovated and equipped with adapted furniture and educational materials.

Sunglasses, Caps and Suncreams
In a country like Tanzania, albino children, of whom many are visually impaired, are often neglected. Even though the continuously scorching sun deprives them of their sight and burns their pale skins again and again. Suncreams and sunglasses are difficult to obtain and for most people simply unaffordable. Tanzania Vision Support is trying to help these children with sunglasses, caps and creams.

Walkers and White Canes
Most blind children in Tanzania live an isolated life. To move out of the safe surroundings of their homes they heavily depend on familiy members or close friend to guide them. These children are being supported by Tanzania Vision Support by means of Orientation & Mobility Training by specialist teachers and special resources, such as walkers, white canes and other adapted materials.
